Smell the Incest?

Yes, I know, the title must seem quite odd. If you're worried about the potential for intelligent thoughts in the post, don't worry; none will be made. In my past blogs, I usually have focused on my blog's theme of "Diving In" by taking themes and details we discuss in class and documenting my individual thoughts on the certain subject. This is not the case this week I'm afraid. Horror and disgust have flooded my very being because of two very, very traumatizing instances in the novel "Song of Solomon." One includes the moment Milkman thinks about how "Sleeping with Hagar had made him generous" (Morrison 69). Last time I checked, Hagar and Milkman are related. How awesome. Don't forget the the description of Ruth "Naked as a yard dog, kissing [Dr. Foster]" when Dr. Foster, her father, passes away (Morrison 73). I'm sorry that you had to read that, but don't fret; every word in this book is necessary for us as students to grow as more intellectual writers, right?
I'm sorry Ms. Valentino. I can't really be deep and look for all the symbolism in the novel while this happens right under my nose. I understand that you said this novel would be crazy, but this is beyond crazy. Are we even allowed to read this? Unable to focus my thoughts on the beautiful themes presented in the book, I have instead decided to write a grievance just as our Founding Fathers had to show the King his wrongdoings. I'm sure that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson would be very proud of my great challenge and the heroic endeavors I have embarked upon. First and foremost, I have a question directed toward Toni Morrison: why? Contrary to what people may believe, incest is not wincest. It is the exact opposite. Not only has she drawn my attention from the great points she makes in the novel, she has hurt my soul. While I'm on the subject, I have a quick announcement to make. Kids, don't make love to your parents. That's weird. Anyways, I feel as though something else could be used to replace the situation Morrison uses. Actually, scratch that; anything can be used to replace someone kissing her dead father. Look at me, just a innocent student trying his best to learn everything I can from this difficult yet informative English AP class, speared with this information. What am I to do? Once again, I must apologize Ms. Valentino for the lack of depth in this post. Quite honestly, I don't know if I can even think about the theme of African Americans being controlled by white American. I haven't read chapter four yet, and I am truly terrified of what could happen. Hopefully this traumatic and tragic story of my anguish has shed light upon this terrible circumstance. Make a protest, write a letter, anything! Here's our slogan fellow protesters: Don't Let Incest Infest Us!
Author's note: Did you like my title? Do you get it? Incest and incense sound similar. Never mind.
Ok, THAT was funny, the fact you referenced are class and also the way you described this as your"grievance" made this very enjoyable to read. Also, nice job referencing the "incest is wincest" meme, top kek.
ReplyDeleteI love the humor you used in your passage. If I could, I would attach a recording of me laughing. Also, we coincidentally wrote about the exact same thing. I'm not sure if its some deeper meaning that I haven't found, but these weird stories are distracting and quite disturbing.
ReplyDeleteI feel like she included incest in her novel to show exactly how messed up one's life can get when so much negativity is built up. I agree that it's pretty distracting from the deeper meaning, though.
ReplyDeleteNabeel, we read to view other perspectives. Give this novel a chance. Let's see how you feel at the end of it all.
