Can we erase permanent marker?
We are all marked. Whether that marking is positive or negative, it is still there. All of us live with at least one marking, something you have intentionally strived to create or been labeled as. What if you could delete that marking; what if you could start anew? All you have to do is call Mr. Clean, and with his giant magic eraser, he will wipe away your very being. Would you do it? While Tannen does make very good points about how women are "unfairly marked" and men's stylistic choices "[are] unmarked," she fails to mention positive markings. A great athlete. A superb student. A compassionate friend. Would you be willing to lose all of these to just erase some regrets? At first glance. I think most people would rush to take up this offer. Looking deeper reveals more, however. Personally, I don't know what I would do. There are a lot of things I'm not proud of (trust me), but there are so many people and events I do cherish. A clean slate sounds perfect; a chance to fix everything you messed up. That doesn't guarantee you'd have the same things you love now, in such a scenario. So, instead of erasing everything, why can't we erase somethings? Why don't we, as a society, erase the markings we don't want? Let's all take that magic eraser, using it to not only erase ourselves, but also to clean our eyes. Isn't that where the whole issue comes from: our perception. Marking is always a bad thing; it can be good in many different occasions. In the instances it's not, however, I urge you to erase the negative markings you place on others. Maybe then we can live the same, even if we are marked.
Excellent job Nabeel! I really enjoyed your point about the positive aspects of "markings." It was an excellent point and really opened up a new point of view for me. Like the paradoxical title too!
ReplyDeleteI like how you related marked characteristics to being erasable and how we shouldn't strive to start fresh with nothing but to remove only what we perceive to be flaws. Great pun on using the word "marked."
ReplyDeleteThe way you symbolized the magic eraser and integrating it with what you believed in was great! I agree that good can come out of negative "markings" but there are times when it crosses the line and no longer helps society improve.
ReplyDeleteI really like the unique approach you took and how you connected what we read about in class to your blog. I never would have thought to relate it to an all purpose cleaner. This blog really made me think and I enjoyed reading it.
